While my big old tomcat will only tolerate a little Halloween pet hat long enough for me to take a picture, my dog Fritz will gladly wear anything I put on him. As a matter of fact, he loves sporting pet costumes not only at Halloween but any time of year.

I guess Fritz is used to rather silly costumes since my daughter has been playing pet dress up with him from the time he was a puppy.

What would you consider the perfect pet costume? If you were to ask me this question, I would tell you: something cute that everyone would get a kick out of. It would also have to be easy to put on, comfortable for my pet, and cheap enough for me to afford.

Another Halloween is coming, and it’s time to think of that most adorable costume for your little one. If he or she loves cats, why not a cute baby cat costume? There are a lot of plush and comfortable animal costumes available, and in many different colors. Black cats, pink, brown, white, you name it!

Along with furry animals, there are also many character cat costumes your child may love. Does he love Cat in the Hat? There’s a costume for that! Making Your Own Kitty Cat Costume

First, though, if you decide to make a cat costume, this is how to go about doing it. Gather these materials for a cat:

• Solid color shirt, depending on the color of cat you wish to dress as – black, pink, white, brown, etc
• Arm warmers and leg warmers in a different color from your clothing to create a nice contrast and accent
• Leggings that match the color of the shirt
• Headband
• cardboard tube and a flat piece of cardboard
• Felt fabric to make the ears and tail
• Safety Pins
• Glue gun

This is how to begin. For the tail, cut your felt fabric and wrap it around the cardboard tube. Hot glue the seam. Stuff the tube with crumpled newspaper to give it some body, then bend the tail in a couple places to give it shape.

Next, cut triangular shapes out of the cardboard and hot glue extra fabric around it. Glue the ears to the headband.

Dress your child in the shirt and leggings, then the arm and leg warmers. Pin the tail to the back using safety pins, and put on the headband.

Done! No, not quite. Time for the makeup.

Make Your Own Facepaint

Here’s a simple recipe:

• 1/2 cup cold cream
• 2 tbsp corn starch
• Desired colors using drops of food coloring and mixing

Mix in a small bowl until you achieve the thickness you want. Add some water if it’s too thick, more cornstarch if it’s too thin. Then, with a brush, paint your child’s face, mainly the nose, whiskers and around the eyes.

I’m always a little surprised by how many small pet stores there are in my city. Oh, sure, there are plenty of PetSmart and Petco stores, but there are such a big number of individually owned mom-and-pop pet shops.

Some cater to the farmer or the hobby farmer and some of them specialize in specific topics such as backyard ponds or exotic birds. But for the most part, most of these small stores try to carry supplies for all types of domestic pets.

I do my best to drive past the superstore chains to support these local merchants, but to be honest, I love shopping online as well. So there are times when I shop for my cat supplies at one of the good online cat stores. I support my local pet store owner as much as possible because I know they love their pets and that’s why they opened their store to begin with. I have seen everything now; they have custom dog collars that I saw the other day when I went shopping. I really had to look twice once at the dog and the other time at the owner. That got me thinking how individual the collars looked and completely different than the usual collars are out now a days. I flicked through a magazine and saw Paris Hilton carrying her pooch and he had diamonds embedded into her collar, they were probably real diamonds no doubt. Hmmm think I will take Muffet to try on a custom collar next time we are out!

A wicker dog bed is my choice of the best bedding for your dog because it is warm in winter and it is cool in summer as the open weave of the wicker allows air to circulate. Really it doesn’t matter if your dog is large or if he is cute and a real pip squeak of a dog they will be both comfy.

If you watch when dogs sleep they like to curl up in a little ball the wicker bed replicates the dog position which allows the pooch to snuggle up.
