19 Jul 10 Parrot Care Tips

Providing the proper kind of parrot care means that you will be taking on a lot of daily responsibilities. If you do not have the time to devote to these kinds of things every day, then you should consider choosing another kind of pet.

The biggest part of caring for a parrot is providing the right kind of environment. The cage needs to be large enough that the bird can stretch out his wings full span without touching the bars of the cage, this will be a very large cage and you can even find some that you walk into yourself and be able to stand straight up.

02 Jun 10 Are You Crate Training Your Dog

All training starts with taking advantage of your dog’s natural inclinations to reinforce the behavior you want. The only place your dog will not, by nature, mess, is its sleeping place. Crate training works with your dog’s instinct – he never has the opportunity to be “bad.”

Crate training your dog is fairly intense for you. The rule is: if you are not actively paying attention to your dog, your puppy is in the crate. Period. Even if you’re in the same room. If you’re not watching your puppy, it’s in the crate. If you think “caging” your dog is cruel, get over it. It’s worse for your dog not to know the rules of the house.

Crate training is not an excuse to ignore your dog for hours at a time. A puppy cannot go more than a couple of hours during the day without a “bathroom break.” If your dog learns to mess in its crate the behavior is very difficult to correct. It’s of the biggest challenges when adopting strays or rescues from shelters. It can be done, but requires patience and dedication.

Dogs should be taken out at regular intervals; after meals, after naps and after play sessions. And “business” walks are not playtime. Put the collar and leash on, take the dog to a specific spot you want it to use for its toilet area, give your dog a command “go potty.” If it does, reward it with praise and cookies, say “good go potty.” Forget about public embarrassment. If you’re easily embarrassed, don’t get a dog. Of course you can use any words you want – a friend of ours used “hit it” with her dogs. She just had to be careful not to use the phrase under other circumstances.

Your puppy should also sleep in the crate, ideally in your bedroom. Dogs are social animals, they need to know their “pack” or family, is close by. If the dog wakes you in the night, take it out on leash. Give it 10 minutes to “do its business,” go back in, pop him in his crate, say goodnight and go back to bed. Don’t let the dog out by itself, even in a fenced yard. Again, this isn’t playtime.

As your dog learns what’s expected of him, the next phase is to keep the dog on leash, out of the cage. Tie the leash around a belt loop so that you can go about your daily routine with both hands free. Keep one eye on the dog. When you see his “gotta go” signals, drop what you’re doing and go. Some people are successful in hanging a bell on the doorknob. They ring the bell whenever they take the dog out. The dog learns, over time, to ring the bell when it has to go. Others teach their dogs to “speak” as a signal to go out.

Our dogs are always crated when we leave the house. At this point, they see us reaching for their crate toys (which we stuff with a little peanut butter or kibble) and run for their crates. We don’t necessarily even lock the crates, but they are available to the dogs at all times. It’s their “room,” a safe place they can always go to.

Just a note of caution and safety: never leave a collar or harness on your dog in the crate. It can get caught and cause problems.

21 May 10 Puppy Training Biting – How do I go about it?

Puppy training biting is something I have learnt the hard way. I have spent a good four weeks trying so hard to teach my new puppy to stop biting.

The dog would most outrageously bite anyone who happened to come over and then spend all its free time chewing on anything it found on the floor or less within two feet above it. I was definitely very seriously at the end of my rope.

I did the very same thing that you are doing right now. I figured I would be able to go online and find out how to get the dog to stop biting. I spent nearly three full days putting together my plan of action.

I visited every free website that I could find through the search I had planned in my master plan. Finally I felt I had all the problem areas covered and decided to put my findings to the test.

After three laborious weeks of trying every ploy I could think of and read about I had made absolutely no progress what so ever. In fact I felt that he was biting more then what he was doing before I started the puppy training biting………..

17 May 10 Puppy Leash Training – Some Useful Tips.

Puppy leash training starts the complete training procedure for most do it yourself dog owners. .It is among this group of dog owners that one could find the type that use choke chains and choke collars, hoping to accomplish their training quickly.

A mistake most of them commit is to constantly yank on the choke chain. This should only be used an extreme measure and that too in light tugs. Too many people abuse their dogs during leash training with choke chains and choke collars. With puppy leash training, give the dog commands for an action and if fit is not followed, stop and do it all over again.

You have to be patient. Attempt after a short wait to command the dog again, and when the command is followed make sure you praise the dog and reward it with a treat. Giving the dog a treat when ever it does something right makes it happy and it will want to do the same right thing again.

12 May 10 Handling Baby Dwarf Hamsters

The handlers should be cautious and exercise great care in handling the pups; they can be quite jumpy and run the risk of injuring themselves if they fall from your hands. Breeding dwarf hamsters require constant handling to make the pups tame as they grow older. In two weeks’ time, the pups are now ready for their first solid food. These babies must be given fresh and regular servings of oats or oatmeal, wheat germ and small birdseed. When they are three weeks older they can be already be offered lab blocks which can become their staple meal as they grow older. In order for them to grow faster and healthier it is advisable to feed them on small grains, maybe even slices of cucumbers or red apples. By the time they are ten days old they can already reach for the water bottle. Their mother will start to lessen her nursing as they become more able to eat on their own.

This is the new article I have posted in my dwarf hamster help web site.

The article has information about handling baby dwarf hamsters.

20 Mar 10 Reviews about the Emery Cat Board

Emery Cat Board is yet another As Seen On TV product which has created a lot of buzz. My contention was that the sound effects in the commercial was what was making this product so popular, but when I finally figured out what it was for, the Emery Cat made a lot of sense to me.

As with most As Seen TV products, the beauty is in the fact that each product is designed to provide a simple solution to a simple problem. It’s the “I could of thought of that” which keeps television viewers so intrigued. The Emery Cat certainly falls into this category. Any cat owner knows what I’m talking about. Cats continually scratch and claw at the furniture and their owners.

01 Mar 10 Strategies with a Dog Potty Patch

You shouldn’t scold him – he doesn’t know any better. That’s why you have the dog potty patch. When you find out where your dog is starting to go everyday you can put the dog potty patch there. When the dog goes to the toilet on the dog potty patch, make sure you praise him so that he knows that it’s the right thing to do. To start training your puppy with a dog potty patch, it’s important to know that your puppy will most likely always go to the bathroom in the house in the same place.

The dog potty patch is a great way to house train a dog. Once your dog is potty trained, you can then get rid of the dog potty pad altogether, but you may want the option to keep him indoor as well. By this point he should know the he should only go to the toilet outside or on the dog potty patches inside. Having a new puppy is an exciting, yet difficult time. The dog potty patch is a great way to make this process easier. House training your puppy can be a downside, but if done initially with dog potty pads you have the best chance of training your dog correctly.

You’ll start to realize when the dog or puppy needs the toilet so you can move the dog potty pad before he goes. Once the dog starts to go outside you should praise him whether he goes onto the dog potty pad or not. Remember, the key to using a dog potty pad effectively is praise not negative feedback. Using dog potty pads indoors is very useful on rainy days when dogs tend to track mud into clean, tidy homes. Eventually you’ll get to the door and you can start to put the dog potty patch outside.

Try to get the dog potty pad to an area of the garden where you want the dog to go to the toilet – leaving dog potty patches right outside the back door probably isn’t a good idea. Next, every time your dog goes to relieve himself you should start moving the potty patches away and closer to the door. As you move the dog potty pad, the dog should always go on the dog potty patch and you should praise him every time he does so. At this point you should be only praising your dog if it goes on the dog potty patch. Once you’ve gotten this far you’re nearly there! Leave the dog potty pad outside (although you need to make sure it is secured down).

08 Feb 10 Information on Ferret Care

I have posted an new article in my ferret guidance web site.

The article is about ferret care and information.

The idea of purchasing a ferret must be built with the consideration in mind of how much time is needed in caring for them. Because of the fact that ferrets are exotic animals coming from the mustelid family, they tend to exhibit a certain odor once they reach adulthood. Thus, de-scenting and neutering the ferret will definitely prove to a be a good move for the owner as it will minimize the odor produced by the ferret and will ensure that there is no litter made. Of course, there is also the need for the ferrets to be sent to consultation by veterinarians, and regular check-ups must be made especially for newly purchased ferrets.

You can find a quality aquarium screen saver that looks like the real thing.

Designers have taken great care in making realistic backgrounds that offer many of the benefits of a real fish tank without all of the hassle.

I love the idea of owning an aquarium of my own but I am realistic enough to know that I will never be able to adequately keep up with maintaining the unit with all of the things that I have to do on any given day.

Instead, I just put an aquarium screen saver on my computer while I am doing my daily chores.

29 Jan 10 Where to find animals for adoption?

When we got married my husband had a young Labrador retriever. When we moved into our first home I wanted to get a cat.

My husband had never spent anytime around cats and was not sure he would want to live with one. I assured him that a cat would grow on him. We knew that there were a number of animals for adoption at the local humane society so we went to look there first.

I was thinking that we would get a kitten.

I thought that it would be easier for all of us to adjust if we started with a young kitty that we could train.

17 Jan 10 House Training A Dog

So, you are interested in house training a dog. That’s a valid concern, and a necessary activity if you’re going to enjoy having your pet spend time indoors with you.

However, be aware that not every dog is equally easy to house train. If you are working with a puppy and are getting a fresh start on house training, just use a small dog crate and everything will be fine.

However, if you’re working with an older dog, especially one who has been abused or has spent a significant amount of time in an unclean area surrounded by his own feces and urine, you might have a more difficult time. Just be patient, use love, set a schedule and be CONSISTENT!

If you need more tips on paper training dogs be sure to check out this article on my webpage!

Thanks,
