07 Jan 12 Dog Training Tips and Tricks

Training a dog can be overwhelming to those who are new at it. There is a lot of information out there and sorting through it all can seem difficult. This article will provide with you several dog training tips to help you get started.

Keep count of the number of treats you feed your dog because you do not want him or her to get fat. Many people don’t take these into account with their diet, but they can add up during active training.

From the very beginning, get everyone in the family active with your dog’s training. If just one person does it, then the dog will be more inclined to only obey that one person. Having everyone do it, tells the dog that he must obey every member of the family. It will stop many dog problems you may encounter in the future with disobedience.

Don’t allow negative interactions with other family members affect your tone of voice when training your puppy. Remember this: if your puppy has not mis-behaved immediately beforehand, every interaction you have with him should be a positive one.

A harness will be more comfortable for you dog, although you will lose some of the control a collar will give you. If you plan on using a harness outside of training, put both that and a collar on your dog during the training process. This will teach him to respond to commands even after the cinching collar is removed.

If you are welcoming a guest into your home, give them clear instructions about how to interact with your dog. These kinds of situations are confusing to the dog as he may not understand who is dominate. Your pet may also decide to leap on your guests.

If you see your puppy chewing on something he should not be, you need to stop him immediately. This will teach him what is appropriate to chew, so that he’ll be less likely to chew on your belongings when you’re not around.

High-value treats should be used when training a dog. Great treats such as small pieces of cheese or a dab of peanut butter can go a long way.

Challenge your dog on a regular basis. Even though you know he’s been properly trained, be sure to quiz him from time to time.

Hopefully, these tips have provided you with some very valuable suggestions. Remember these tips as a guide to helping you train your dog, so both you and your dog will be very happy.
