Projects For Kids
With their unending curiosity, children are like knowledge-absorbing sponges. Kids are known for their desire for activity and play, which can be satisfied through artistic and creative projects. Every child has his or her own way of learning. Some learn through physical activities, while others memorize from songs. Others may enjoy projects inviting creativity and artistic expression.

Projects for kids can be seasonal, based on your budget or geared to available time. Very little money is needed to spark your little one's imagination, and projects for kids can differ from season to season .

If you want to nurture you're child's' love for animals and nature, you're in luck, The great outdoors provide abundant flora that can be used in various projects for kids. These include art and science projects, or simple exploration while playing. Consider making a picture out of fallen leaves during the autumn. Collect some freshly fallen leaves in different shades to glue on poster board or paper. Other outdoor finds like small pebbles, pine cones, acorns, and dried flowers are also good candidates for this project for kids. Draw your design on to your paper and glue. Be sure to use white school glue, because aerosol adhesives can be harmful to little noses and eyes.

Gardening projects for kids are another good way to orient kids to nature. Dedicate a patch of ground to growing vegetables or flowers, letting your child choose what he or she wants to plant. Check the suitability of the plant to the location. Guide your child through the process, and let your child experience the pride of growing a little life.

What if the weather outside is frightful? If its blistering hot or dangerously cold, try some indoor projects for kids. Origami, the art of paper folding, can strengthen kids' perception skills, and the result can be kept for years to come. Instructional origami books can be found for a few dollars, and come with dozens of ideas. Animals are a main theme in Origami. Get some construction or rice paper, and plastic child-safe scissors. Its usually time consuming, so it will keep them busy.

Another cost-saving, weather friendly, project for kids is clay. Available in forms that can either be baked and preserved, or reusable, clay is safe and and can keep children happy for long periods of time. Clay to be baked is white or brown, and is meant to be painted afterwards. Reusable clays are colored and can be disassembled and put back in their containers to be used again at a later time. Baked clays provide the most enjoyment, as after painting, the finished piece can be kept on a dresser or bedside table to be enjoyed by the proud artist.

When you decide on a project idea, make sure that it's weather-appropriate and safe. When collecting outdoor things, attend this so that your munchkin won't cut himself on hidden dangers. Store project supplies in a place that they won't be damaged by curious pets.

Quality Carpets
We have friends that recently purchased a home not far away from our lake home. Their home is also located on the lake and is in need of some tender loving care. The house is a year round family home that had been used by several members of one family once the parents had died. The family members rotated weekends using the house as a weekend getaway. With having multiple people in and out of the home some of the regular maintenance, which goes with owning property, was left undone. My friend told me the first thing she needed to do was to locate some quality carpets.

They were able to take ownership of the lake house one month prior to moving out of their other home. This gave them time to work on the house before moving their things in. The first time I walked into the house I understood what my friend meant about finding quality carpets. The living room area had wall to wall carpeting that may have been quality carpets when it was purchased, but time and hard weekend use had worn and discolored it. My friend had brought several quality carpets samples from a local dealer. The dealer had told her to narrow down her choices from the carpet samples that she was interested in and he would then come out to measure the areas.

The need for quality carpets extended into the bedroom areas also. The only carpeting that was is good shape was in the master bedroom, and it was such an ugly color that it needed replacing also. Our friends were concerned about the amount of money that the quality carpets were going to cost them. Especially when they were thinking of putting in quality carpets into 3 bedrooms as well as the living room. We all agreed that even though this meant for a large expense initially, it would be much easier for the carpet layers to install the quality carpets prior to having furniture moved in. One of the ways they could save money was to remove the existing carpet themselves. When the guys started removing the carpet and padding they found that there were hardwood floors in the living room area. The hardwood was in nice shape, it just needed cleaning and a coat of sealer. There was one dark spot that must have been caused by water damage, but it was located where it could be covered by a piece of furniture. Our friends were pleased that not only did they not have to purchase quality carpets for this room, but that they had beautiful wood floors to add to the beauty of the room.

My friend and I went shopping for quality carpets that were to be used as area rugs in place of wall to wall carpeting. This was much less expensive and they could be changed when a different color scheme is wanted.

The lake home is starting to look much better. The carpets in the bedrooms make them feel and look cleaner. I think our friends will be very pleased with how their efforts are turning their fixer upper into a nice home.

Remodeling A Basement
remodeling a basement can be one of the most rewarding home improvement projects that you can undertake. A lot of people put off basement remodeling for far too long, giving up available space that could be quite useful for entertaining, storage, or even extra living space. This is because of some of the unique problems with remodeling basements. A high proportion of basement suffer from water damage. Sometimes, it can be very mild and sometimes more severe. Even in more mild or moderate cases, however, mildew problems can make it hard to spend a lot of time in the basement without developing allergy symptoms.

What people don't understand is how easy it is to take care of these problems when remodeling a basement. Unless you have some serious structural problems with your house, you can easily deal with mildew and move on. Because so many basements are built out of unfinished concrete, the solutions are pretty easy. You seal up and patch any cracks or holes in the concrete, disinfect the basement, and move on. That is really all there is to it!

In my case, basement remodeling was kind of an afterthought. We had remodeled the living room and bedroom as well as the bathroom, but were still unhappy with the amount of living space we had. We wanted more space, and we were actually thinking of putting on an addition. We do not realize that remodeling a basement was an option. We were so used to ignoring the space, and besides a lot of it was currently being used for storage. Finally, we got around to cleaning it out. We turned it into a recreation room and, to our surprise, it soon became our very favorite room in the house!

When remodeling a basement, special care should be taken. A lot of people choose to remodel a basement just like any other room in the house. In my opinion, this might be the wrong approach. You see, no matter how unpleasant it is to think about, you have to deal with the possibility of basement flooding. Because this is the case, it often pays to plan ahead of time. Rather than using carpets or wood floors, you can use vinyl flooring for your remodeled basement. That way, if something does happen, the floor will be less damaged and will be easier to replace if necessary. Similarly, furniture can be kept fairly simple and minimal just in case.

Rental Property
rental property

A couple of years ago my parents bought a second home in a little town about an hour's drive northeast of Toronto, Ontario. They already own a nice big house on a river with a gorgeous lot, big trees and great neighbors. However, they bought the second house to be used as a rental property until they retire in five or six years.

My parents are not new to being landlords. They have experience with renting, having rented in the past themselves, and currently renting out their guest cottage as a rental property. The difference with their new rental property is that it's far enough away that my father can't keep on eye on things and ensure that their latest tenant is maintaining the house and property to a sufficient degree. Of course, from time to time, my parents will take an afternoon and drive over to make sure all is well at their rental property and they do keep in touch with the tenant by telephone as well. So far they have been very fortunate to find responsible individuals that treat the rental property with respect and keep it clean an tidy, as they likely would their own home.

In the past my parents had some trouble with one tenant. She refused to take her garbage to the bin and would simply throw it out her back door, essentially into my parents yard. My parents have two small dogs who are allowed to run about the yard for their daily exercise. What a disaster it was the one afternoon my mother turned her back on them for a second, only to find they'd torn the trash bag open and had strewn garbage across the yard. After that, my parents approached the tenant and insisted that no garbage be left out where pets or wild animals could reach it. The tenant was quite rude and ended up leaving the rental property shortly thereafter, to my parents relief.

Of course there might be misunderstandings and differences from time to time, however my parents have found that the best route to success in renting out a rental property is to have a clearly defined tenant/landlord agreement signed, along with any rental agreement. That way ground rules are laid before any problems arise, thereby circumventing potentially large issues down the road. So too, it's important to familiarize oneself with all rental laws including regional by-laws that might affect the rental property. Following these guidelines can really help to ensure good tenant/landlord relations and ensure that a rental property stays rented on a permanent basis.
