Hanging Flower Plants
hanging flower baskets
One of the things I remember about spending time at my grandmother's house during the summer was her collection of hanging flower baskets. She had quite a few, and each of them had a different type of plant. They all hung on her front porch, and I would spend quite a lot of time helping her water and trim the plants. There was one in particular that I loved the most. I have no idea what type of flower it was, but the flowers would often make a popping sound if you pinched them lightly before they opened.
My grandmother still has hanging flower baskets on her front porch, even though she no longer can care for them. My grandfather knows that she loves them, and he now cares for them because she is not longer able to walk out and water them herself. She still has the same types of plants she had all those years ago, so I would guess they were her favorites as much as they were mine. Some of the hanging flower baskets that she has are the same ones she had then. Not the same type, but the same exact plant. Not only does she loves them, she is a whiz at keeping plants healthy. Sadly, this is not something I have inherited.
I would love to have some hanging flower baskets on my front porch, but I don't have much of a porch at the moment. It might be more of a stoop than anything, but there is room to hang something. When we buy our own house I will be sure to get all of the hanging flower baskets that I want. When we buy, a front porch with enough room for the ones that I want will be one of the things high on the list. Though many wouldn't make that a priority when buying a home, I most certainly will.
If you love plants, but you have pets in your home, you may want to invest in a few hanging flower plants of your own. There are many plants that your pets can not eat, and you want to keep them up off of the ground, and you want to make sure there is no way to get to them. You should also be careful to make sure that you pick up any leaves or petals that may fall from the plant so that your pets don't eat those as well. You should still go with a safe plant, but it is always best to err on the side of caution when it comes to your pets, and your children as well.
Home Security Systems Home Security Systems
With crime rates increasing across the country, it seems that even middle-class suburbs are no longer the safe havens that they once were. I don't consider myself an alarmist by any means, but I do take safety seriously -- particularly where my family is involved. That's why I've spent the last couple of weeks shopping around for a good home security system.
I have never had a home security system before, so I was under the impression that they were extremely expensive, complicated to set up, and required long-term contracts with an alarm monitoring company. However, after I started looking into these products a bit more, I learned that none of my initial fears have any real merit, as home security systems have become far more affordable to the average consumer in recent years.
When I first started shopping for a home security system, I wasn't quite sure which features I should look for. At the very least, I wanted a product that would sound an alarm if any of my doors or windows were tampered with, but beyond that, I had no idea what else would be useful.
Were motion sensors worth the extra money or were they too inconvenient to work with? Would having dogs in the house lead to too many false alarms or are today's home security systems sophisticated enough to tell the difference between pets and intruders? Is a perimeter alarm necessary or could I do without it? These were some of the questions I had in mind while comparing all the different products.
Fortunately, I was able to find a few very informative websites that told me just about everything I needed to know about home security systems. After reading about the various features that the newest safety products come with, I felt prepared to make decisions about what would be best for my family.
After I made my final choice, I purchased my home security system online from a great site that offered me a hefty discount on the product I wanted. I was also able to get a special introductory discount at a reputable alarm monitoring company, and I even scored a few upgrades, such as free flood and fire monitoring.
So I want to say that if you're one of those people who always thought that home security systems were way out of your budget, I suggest that you take another look. They're surprisingly affordable, and are the best way to protect your family and belongings from break-ins, intrusions, and even natural disasters.
Landscaping Lights Over the years we have completed many projects in our yard. We live in the country so there are no street lights to light our yard at night. We do have motion sensor lights at our backdoor to help light the entrance that we use most often, but the front yard always appeared quite dark. We did not want to leave the light on at the front door because it tends to attract bugs. We decided we would look at landscaping lights to place along the sidewalk.
At the home improvement center we found that there are a wide variety of landscaping lights to choose from. Some of the landscaping lights were sold in sets and others were sold individually. There was a wide variety of solar powered landscaping lights. We liked this option because we would not have to run cords and wires. We have two dogs that like to chase chipmunks and squirrels and we were concerned that they would get tangled in wires and electrical cords. The solar landscaping lights have a battery that is charged by sun light. The lights come on automatically at dusk and stay lit for several hours. We liked the idea that the lighting would not cost additional money on our electric bill. Each solar light has its own battery cell, so they do not have to be placed a certain distance from each other. With the electrical lights you can only space them as far apart as the length of the cord.
We purchased eight solar lights that were shaped like small coach lights. They were made of copper and attached to stakes that you push into the ground. We placed them around the front and side of our home amongst the shrubs. In placing them you need to be sure that the cell that gathers the solar light is facing north. We had also purchased two larger solar lights that hang on shepherd hooks. We placed one of these at the beginning of the front walk way and one by the back walkway.
The landscaping lights are very attractive. They turn on and off automatically and not only provide for safety, but add beauty to the area as well. The lights that are low to the ground around the bushes do not seem to attract bugs. The lights that are placed on the shepherd hooks are far enough away from the doors that the bugs they attract do not cause an issue for getting in and out of the house. We like the landscaping lights so much that we are going to add a few spot lights to the backyard ornamental trees. The spot lights are placed about a foot from the base of the tree and are positioned to shine up the tree. This will add light and safety to the backyard as well.
Leather Furniture Leather furniture
It seems like having a leather interior for your vehicles used to be a symbol of status. I desperately wanted my time to come when I could afford a vehicle that had leather seats so that I too, could feel like I was somebody. Finally, my day came and I bought a gorgeous convertible with those precious seats. Within a week, I hated them. Whenever the top was down, the leather was too hot to sit on and I'd be sitting in a puddle of sweat by the end of my drive. However, I was determined to not complain. I had my seats that I'd longed for. When I traded that car in, the salesman asked me if I wanted leather seats again and I said "no thank you." I'd hate enough of that.
Perhaps the same mentality holds true for leather furniture. Is it a sign of status or wealth? Perhaps it is. However, you won't find leather furniture in my household. It would never withstand my toddler and my two cats. Plus, I can't fathom the idea of spending more money than necessary on any kind of furniture until my daughter is grown and not climbing all over everything anymore. My sister has all leather furniture and I've seen her scowl when my daughter heads for the living room. She's started to put large blankets over her leather couch whenever I come to visit. Her leather furniture is entirely too precious for her to have damaged in any manner. Not that I blame her, of course. I just don't appreciate the look of discontentment that she casts in my daughter's direction.
Apparently leather furniture is an excellent seller because retail stores still carry lots of it. Whether you're looking for a leather recliner or a large couch, it all still exists. Heck, you can even get leather accessories to match your leather furniture! Just keep a few things in mind if you do plan on purchasing leather furniture. First and foremost, pets and children can wreak havoc on the tender surfaces. Sure, you can protect it with all kinds of stuff that salespeople want to sell you, but do you really want to be paranoid whenever someone lets their child into your house? If you have cats that are clawed, don't even think about it. Even if they're declawed, their back claws could still scratch when jumping. In the wintertime, your leather furniture could be a bit too cold when sitting on it. In the summertime, a warm house and a leather couch in the path of direct sunlight could become rather warm when sitting upon it. Don't purchase leather furniture of any kind unless you know that it will be
maintained and appreciated.
